Chunky Monkey Post-Workout Smoothie Bowl + Rootz Nutrition Review!

Confession: I used to be a meathead. Keyword: Used to. Seriously…it was an obsession. I would not eat anything unless it had at least 10 grams of protein, and I ate 150 grams of protein a day. Nowadays I average about 100 grams of protein with three meals and one snack all high in protein. I honestly do not know how I did it. What I do remember was eating LOTS of protein-filled “treats” like homemade protein poptarts and protein powder mug cakes (and things of the likes). They seemed delicious and nutritious at the time—if only I knew then what I know now.

The sad fact is, most of the protein powders on the market today are everything but nutritious. Sure, grass-fed whey and egg white protein powder are healthier alternatives for up-ing your protein intake, but they lack the vitamins and minerals found in meat and poultry.

The Pre-Workout

I mixed the pre-workout with 12 oz. of water (as recommended). Rootz is a lot thicker than the pre-workouts I’m used to—that’s because it’s made with REAL food and not just caffeine mixed with artificial flavors / sweeteners. The day that I tried this for the first time, I was SUPER tired. Even though I didn’t finish the entire drink, I was still filled with energy by the time my workout came!

The Post-Workout

The first time I tried Rootz protein blend, I used the recommended 12 oz. of almond milk. Alone, the shake was decent and reminded me of other plant-based protein shakes that I have had. There is a slight banana flavor, but it reminds me of a vanilla shake for the most part. Just like the pre-workout, it was thicker, but it is also filled with tons of superfoods. The drink filled me up until I could get my post-workout meal in, and that’s a big thing I look for in a protein shake! Instructions

  1. Place the protein powder, frozen banana, ice, almond milk, and cocoa powder in a blender and blend on high until completely smooth.
  2. Pour the smoothie into a bowl or glass and top with the optional toppings, if desired.
